ENGLISH LITERARY ASSOCIATION (ELA)
The English Literary Association, an extension of the Dept. of Business Communication, focuses on enhancing the soft skill of students; preparing them to face the challenges of job market. This Academic- Year several activities were conducted which acted as stimulation for the learners of our college. These enabled them to become strong physically as well as cognitively with a pleasant personality. The objective behind conducting these activities is to make the learner leave the institute with a clear understanding of all aspects of communicating, bridging the gap between the book and the reality. Enhancing the learner’s soft skill fulfills today’s industry’s expectations.
ELA planned a number of activities involving learners from all discipline of Degree College, and successfully completed them during the year 2012-2013.

GUEST LECTURES: During these sessions the students had a direct interaction with eminent professionals and experts from the various corporate designations. The first much awaited guest lecture for the first academic session was conducted on August 2012. Mr. Vinit Karnik, National Director, Group ESP was invited for this academic venture and he gave wonderful insights on corporate based “Effective Business Communication”. He gave a vision of communication in the corporate world and how the learners should adapt to this and prepare themselves, to face the rapidly changing working environment. The learners were exposed to the industry expectations of communication and the current trends and development in the industry..
The second guest lecture of the academic session was held on 6th December, 2012 as an initiative of the “Anti Tobacco and Anti Smoking Campaign” jointly organized by the ELA and the Mathematics Association. The topic was student focused and was especially planned to generate awareness among our young students on the harmful effects of Smoking and Tobacco. This informative and appealing session was conducted by “Cancer Aid and Research Foundation” This lecture mainly conveyed the message to its target audience with the help of fascinating audio and visual clips. It was an eye opener for the young budding students and the teachers as well about the ill effect of cultivating this bad habit.
The third invite for our next guest speaker was on 16th Feb. 2012 the speaker was the young, enthusiastic and dynamic Ms. Madhumita Sinha, a Corporate Consultant & Associate Professor TIMSR. She professionally shaped up the learners on the topic “Gearing up to become Employable” and encouraged them to prepare for their future interviews, enlightening them about facing an interview and the requirements the Corporate look for in an interviewee/employee. This session was very interactive and lively.
ON THE SPOT STORY WRITING COMPETITION: The first semester began with creativity and imagination. On August 28, 2012 this event was conducted in which we received an overwhelming response from 150 young learners from all streams of Degree College. The participants came out with very remarkable and imaginative stories within a given time limit.
ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION: It is said that “Pen is mightier than a sword” well this proved right during the essay writing competition, conducted on August 10, 2012. Lots of enthusiastic participants applied their writing skills and wrote essay on current topics like: Role of Youth in Nation’ Development, Declining Sex-Ratio in India, Challenges & Problems faced by Youngsters.
ELOCUTION COMPETITION was conducted December 08, 2012 in which 45 students participated earnestly and confidently.
POSTER AND SLOGAN MAKING COMPETITION was held on December 12, 2012, on the theme that involved “Anti smoking and Anti Tobacco Campaign”. Several breath catching posters along with enthralling slogans created by our students were displaced in the seminar hall as well as all over the college. Young ingenious artist expressed their imagination and creativity in visuals that carried various messages on the given topic. This poster and slogan competition was a visual treat and a huge success.
POWER-POINT COMPETITION (GROUP): The second semester began with new energy and enthusiasm, ELA organized a PowerPoint Presentation group competition. During this event the learners displayed their confidence, creativity and knowledge. A number of vibrant groups participated, on January 12, 2013 and 200 students from various groups displayed their skill.
This was not an end as there were more awards and prizes which surprised and excited the presenters. The participants got motivated and encouraged by this gesture of the organizers.
The Department also conducted Extra Classes for the F.Y. B.COM. & B.SC. IT to help them with overcome their difficulties and prepare for exams. So, along with exams, internals and assignment the students were charged up by the above-mentioned major activities organized by ELA as targeted. Exposure to these activities made the students transcend to a higher level of maturity and intellect with high confidence to mould their lives in a new and meaningful direction. The academic year 2012-2013 was an exciting and a successful year.
STUDENTS ACIEVEMENTS: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!
- Tanvi G. Waunjkar from F.Y.B.COM. O won the second prize in Elocution Competition by participating in Gandhi Jayanti competitions, organizedby Gandhi Smarak Nidhi. Mumbai, on 2nd Oct. 2012.
- Vibhuti M Sharma from F.Y.B.COM. S won the second prize in Essay Competition on the topic “My life is my message”- M.K. Gandhi. This competition too was organized by Gandhi Smark Nidhi, Mumbai on 2nd Oct. 2012
- Divyashre M. Warrier S.Y. B.Com ‘H 1’ won a Merit certificate at the Intercollegiate Elocution Competition on 9th Dec. 2012, at Sathye College. Her topic for Elocution was “Dowry Customs: A Burning Problem’’.
- Shweta Shanbagh from F.Y. B. Com ‘S’, won a Merit certificate for her slogan in the Slogan Making Competition on “Anti Dowry”, arranged by Samajkranti and Stri-Mukti organization Mumbai in Jan. 2013.
